👉🏻 Lyophitech Reinvents the Freeze-Drying Process

Based in the Lyon metropolitan area, Lyophitech has developed a dynamic freeze-drying technology in partnership with Air Liquide, according to Lyon Entreprises. The process relies on ultra-rapid freezing at −196°C using liquid nitrogen and aims to better preserve sensitive biological molecules while improving reproducibility and reducing the degradation commonly observed with traditional freeze-drying methods. The use of liquid nitrogen also offers a regulatory advantage, as it eliminates the need for refrigerants that are subject to new European restrictions.

Low Earth orbit is opening up new possibilities for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. On Earth, the composition of pharmaceutical formulations is constantly affected by gravity through sedimentation and convection processes. Small crystals can become trapped between larger ones, increasing the viscosity of the liquid. In contrast, in space, “the absence of gravity allows scientists to grow more uniform and higher-quality crystals,” explains Phil Williams, Professor of Biophysics at the University of Nottingham, in an interview with CNBC. By reducing viscosity, complex treatments could potentially be transformed into smoother, more effective injectable formulations for patients.

In response to the European Commission’s consultation, EuropaBio has identified five priorities for an “ambitious” Biotech Act II. The association is calling for the completion of a regulatory framework tailored to microorganisms, stronger access to public and private funding throughout the entire innovation value chain, easier access to renewable and circular carbon-based feedstocks, the creation of pilot markets for biomanufactured products, and the development of interconnected European biomanufacturing corridors. “Given the current global pressures on economies and supply chains, the EU cannot afford to stand still,” warns Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio.
